The environmentally conscious Young Defenders of Nature, consisting of the teachers and students of Iskele Evkaf Turkish Maarif College, reached striking findings on the environmental problems created by the Aksa Power Plant in Kalecik, which has been discussed in the community for a long time and has recently caused protests. According to the interviews they made with the residents of Kalecik village, as a result of the production of electricity with fuel oil, Nitrous oxide (NOx) and Sulfur oxide (SOx) emissions that are harmful to human health are produced. While the amount of SOx gas in Aksa is at the required level, NOx gas is well above the limits. The reason for the low level of SOx gas is not due to the measures taken, but because the fuel used already contains a small amount of sulfur. Electricity generation with fuel oil, which is considered outdated in the world, is quite expensive. This causes the citizens to pay electricity bills at exorbitant prices. Aside from the fact that the gas emissions are above the limit in Aksa, the mandatory system for measuring and monitoring the flue gases 24/7 has been broken for a few years, so the values cannot be measured21. Two of the rare countries that produce energy using fuel oil in the 19th century are the TRNC and Ghana. Even in Ghana, while the length of the chimney is 72 meters, it is only 24 meters in Aksa, since there is no law in the TRNC. This increases the negative impact of the gases coming out of the chimney. In interviews conducted in Kalecik, which is the closest village to Aksa, it is emphasized that cancer and respiratory diseases are increasing. Below is the full text of the article published by the Young Defenders of Nature about their research. electricity! While we are bothered by frequent and long-term power cuts, Aksa is one of the most controversial topics on the agenda with titles such as “purchase guaranteed contract” and “expensive electricity”… Let's look at electricity generation from a different perspective. Aksa, which meets half of the electricity need in the TRNC,' The destruction caused by the environment and people is either overlooked or ignored. In this article, information obtained from the Aksa Power Plant and Environment Department and interviews with the residents of Kalecik village are shared. Aksa is a company serving in the energy sector under Kazancı Holding. It started production on the Kalecik coast in 2003 with two units and a total installed power of 35 mW. Aksa produces electricity by burning fossil fuels (Fuel oil). Harmful gases are released to the nature not only during the combustion of fuel, but also during the disposal of waste generated during production. According to the 'Restriction of Air Pollutant Emissions from Large Combustion Plants Regulation' revised on January 1, 2017, SOx emission is 250 mg/Nm3 and NOx emission is It should be below 200 mg/Nm3 limits. While the amount of SOx gas in Aksa is at the required level, NOx gas is well above the limits. The reason for the low level of SOx gas is not the precautions taken, but the fact that the fuel used already contains a small amount of sulfur. Fuels with a sulfur content of 1% are imported. As it is not an environmentally friendly solution, electricity bills burn pockets as the production cost is expensive. Aksa has been fined in recent years due to its high flue gas emissions. "Funny" fines, which are three or four times the minimum wage, are far from deterrent. Continuing production at Aksa Power Plant for years without the necessary technical and technological improvements means that people continue to be poisoned by breathing harmful gases. Apart from the fact that gas emissions are above the limit, it is mandatory for Aksa to measure and monitor flue gases 24/7. It has been learned that the system, which has been in operation for a few years, has been malfunctioning. In the face of this grave situation, Aksa was given a warning by the Environmental Protection Agency. It was warned that if the flue gas emissions are not measured, a penalty of 100 times the minimum wage will be imposed. How painful it is to not even know how much the released gases are above the level…21. Two of the rare countries that produce energy using fuel oil in the 19th century are the TRNC and Ghana. The chimney length of the current obsolete system, which causes harmful emissions to human health in Aksa, does not have the required height. While the chimney length is 72 meters in Ghana, which produces energy using fuel oil, at the Aksa Power Plant, which produces energy in the TRNC (because there is no government standard). ) chimney length is only 24 meters. This situation causes the negative effects of the emitted gases to increase much more than normal in terms of health and environment. In the interview made in Kalecik village, which is the closest to Aksa Power Plant, it was revealed that cancer cases were especially high in the village. Village people stated that the village was under the influence of waste gases during the days when the wind was blowing from south to north. They stated that in such periods, they felt the intense chemical in their lungs with every breath they took, they had problems in tasting, and they could not even open the windows of their homes. In developed countries, both economical and sustainable solutions and options are applied to ensure that people and other living things continue their lives in a healthier environment. as it will cause high economic costs; Switching from fuel oil electricity generation to natural gas or renewable energy generation model instead of making filter investments in the outdated system is indisputably the most logical solution. Thus, SOx, NOx and other harmful emissions will be reduced to negligible limits within the framework of EU environmental standards and the TRNC people will have the clean air quality they deserve. the owner will get the right to life.21. It is a great tragedy that we are at war with the current order on environmental health and human life in the 21st century. This is not the treatment our people deserve, and they do not have the right to destroy the environment in line with the interests of certain groups. Based on the promise that time is the most precious treasure, we invite the TRNC State to heed the call of the youth and take the necessary step immediately to switch to natural gas or renewable energy production. As a final word, the state-run Teknecik Power Plant, which produces electricity with a similar system to Aksa and causes power outages due to frequent breakdowns, should be reconsidered in the light of these facts.” MHA İSKELE EVKAF TURKISH MAARIF COLLEGE YOUNG DEFENDORS OF NATUREStudents: Alperen Yakar – Lavin Su Erdoğdu – Metehan Emin – Eylül Barani – Eda Gül Kaya – Ayşe ÇetinkayalıTeachers: Tuğçe Mani – Sevinç Music
