Two screenings from Spain’s cinema world will soon hit Nicosia as the Embassy of Spain, Instituto Cervantes and the Friends of Cinema Society collaborate. The screenings will be held at the Cultural Centre of the European University and will include subtitles in Greek.
The first film to be screened, on January 13, is Óscar Aibar’s El Sustituto, a 2021 film whose title translates to The Replacement. The film received three nominations in Spanish film festivals for Best Actor and Best Film and is a suspense film about a young police officer who takes a post in a small seaside town. As he investigates the mysterious circumstances of his predecessor’s death, the evidence leads him to a community of elders that hide a dark secret.
The next screening, on January 22, will present Carla Simón’s Alcarràs, a 2022 film about a family of peach farmers in a small village in Catalonia. The film zooms in on the Solé family who for generations have made a living from the summer harvest of their peach orchard in the Catalan town of Alcarrás. After the death of the owner of the property, however, his heir wants to sell the land, suddenly threatening their livelihood. A total of 49 nominations have been made for the film and in 2022 it won the Best Film Award at the Golden Berlin Bear.
